I spent significant time crafting the backstory for Penny, the sole playable character. Drawing from her experience as a CIA operative, I established her motivations and internal conflicts. Penny’s story is shaped by her upbringing in a military household and her father’s emotional scars, which led to her drive to protect others without showing vulnerability.
Penny’s professional life as a CIA operative introduced new challenges and losses, including the death of her husband, Jack, during a mission she authorized. This tragedy deepened her emotional disconnect, turning her into a perfectionist who buries herself in work. This backstory isn’t just a narrative device; it informs the player’s understanding of her decisions and actions in the game. Her strained relationship with her daughter Emily adds another layer, creating opportunities for emotional storytelling and player connection.
